Where To Buy

URSA Straps have been a complete game changer for me and my team. URSA Straps allow us to rig radio mics on costumes previously thought to be un-micable. Tight dresses, sports wear, stunt harnesses – all can be easily mic’d using low profile URSA Straps.

URSA Foamies are excellent. I love the way the capsule is almost exposed. Great for polo shirt buttons and great sound for indoors.

I love the convenience of the URSA Tape Soft Strips and use them a lot for quietening down noisy mic placements.

It’s all about MiniMounts, absolutely amazing! Lowest profile mount that works great; especially with the low profile Plush Circles.

I’ve used URSA MiniMounts exclusively for the last week on everything from starched white shirts, to dancers practice gear and leotards, through to cotton overalls on the engine room crew, they’ve been brilliant to use, usually not needing any tweaking.

We put 6 Chest Straps on talent running a tough mudder. All came back with the straps still attached! So pretty impressed with what these straps can go through.

On my latest film we had a lot of very very tight costumes and the new URSA MiniMounts have really helped reduce bulges and leave the mics where i want them rather than having to move them to an inferior position to reduce the bulge of the disk.

The gripper on the URSA Thigh Strap is a great addition, as slippy straps can be a problem and the cable keeper on the waist straps is really practical. Great collaboration between sound and costume, designed by the users, used by the designers.

Our lead actress was so blown away by the URSA Ankle Strap, that she wanted to know where to buy some so that she could use them on every show.

Enable URSA Straps rolling GOD mode by typing IDDQD and follow (or go play Doom2 instead). Love this, we should probably get some. We spend long enough rolling up these things. 😂

‘WICKED’ is coming out soon and was mixed by @simonhayessound

For the production Simon asked URSA to make him some Circular MiniMounts for DPA 4060s in a variety of unique colour tones to match costumes.

Simon recently shared these two images of these rigs - on occasion they were able to get the rigs painted out. No fuss, easy to do and it helped allow Simon get clean live vocals throughout.

In Simons words “The mic is attached to the jumper which is the noisy factor, but by choosing to stick it to the jumper it means the fabric will not move on the mic or the mount. The quieter fabric is the soft cotton shirt. By using the smooth URSA Straps mount, we are reducing friction between the mic and shirt as much as possible. There is no fabric touching the grill of the mic which is a key point.”

We cannot wait to see Wicked! Thank you Simon & team for their amazing work.

How Much Does A Boom Weigh? Well with a transmitter on the end roughly 2kg when unextended & almost 10kg when fully extended.

Here is a great demonstration of this from Nathan at @half9media

Did you know there’s actually a reason it feels heavier when extended?

It’s because it actually IS heavier.

Mechanical advantage of a weight further away from the axis of a lever makes a smaller force have a greater impact on torque 🦾

In this case, that means a tiny microphone gains a few pounds 🥵

While that’s all fine when we’re talking about 5-20lbs, now add in fine motor skills and dodging light and shadows by inches, all while predicting how an actor will move.

Sound tricky?

Two New Ways of Using URSA Foamies 👀

Sometimes sticking Foamies directly down can create sticky tape noise & also damage the Foamie. So here are two techniques which avoid using Sticky Tape close to the mic capsule.

Every Pack of Foamies come with 4 Black Safety Pins - in this video Simon from URSA demonstrates how you can use these pins to go through the Foamie and the fabric to create a secure rig which moves with the fabric. These can be great to pin around the neckline of a T-Shirt or on the V opening of a Shirt where the buttons are undone.

The other rig involves halving the length of the Foamie with a pair of Scissors and sticking down the cable just behind the Foamie with a piece of Tape (URSA Tape was used in this video but pretty much any quiet tape can work). Again this allows the Foamie to flex and move with the material rather than fighting against it.

What do you think? Please leave your comments below!!

We Tried Out Scar Tape as an option for Rigging Mics directly onto Hairy Chests 😬👀

It’s sticky stuff and remarkably doesn’t peel hair off when removed. However it might not be the right solution every time. So we tried out some alternative ideas as well including an X Strap Rig with extra Furtangle on top.

Big thanks to Alex Haralson AKA @sonolocus for being such a good sport in this video! And shout out to his team on Moonshiners Master Distiller, looks like a fun show to work on 🤪
